This half-day workshop on the ‘Fundamentals of Instrumentation and Monitoring’ focused on ways of monitoring groundwater, displacements and load and strain as well as the usage of geographic information systems in monitoring processes, recent advances in fibre optic sensing and the role of instrumentation in different geotechnical situations. This workshop before the conference offered delegates a useful mixture of theoretical background and practical examples.
Sixteen Year 12 students from Uckfield Community Technology College braved the freezing temperatures and ventured down to Soil Instruments for their annual visit. All studying "A"level Physics, the students were keen to see Soil Instruments geotechnical and structural sensors with a particular interest in Vibrating Wire technology sensors, which they have been studying as part of their course.
Soil Instruments are sponsoring the Pre-Conference Workshop at the Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring Conference on 30 March 2010.
